Cost of Living Index [U.S. Census Bureau] NOTE: There is a cost of living index which allows you to compare the cost of living across smaller cities and towns. It is called the ACCRA Cost of Living Index and is produced by C2ER (Council for Community and Economic Research). It is a table in the Statistical Abstract of the United States, but not the online version on the Census Bureau's web site due to copyright restrictions. You must go to the print edition at Clapp Docs HA 202 A2 for the latest data. You want Table 706 in the 2009 volume. Note also that the statistics in the 2009 volume are actually from 2007.
Cost of Food at Home [USDA] - Look for the most recent data. Look here for descriptions of the amounts of food purchased for the various food plans.

Local wage, income, and occupational privilege taxes - some cities and towns have local taxes. You can use ProQuest Statistical Datasets EASI Market Planner to get a sense of what consumers have paid. Vision insurance is covered or not covered by health insurance. Costs not covered are usually paid out-of-pocket. You can also use the kaiser Family Foundation's Employer Health Benefits 2010 Annual Survey.

Education Expenses

Average cost of college, break down the college bill, and find a college [College Board]
Tuition and fees from previous years. You can use the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archive to find past web pages of educational institutions. Type the url of the educational institution you are looking for in the search box. Choose the date you want from the results list. Look for a link to Admissions, then tuition and fees. You cacan also use this table from the Bureau of Education Statistics for a national average.

Trends in College Pricing [College Board] - use this to get an idea of average state and regional college expenses for public and private universities. For costs for a specific institution, go to that institution's Web site and find the current list of expenses.
Textbook Expenses - use this General Accounting Office report to find textbook increases from 1987/88 to 2004/05. Look at Appendix II on page 39. After 2005, the Bureau of Labor Statistics also tracks college textbooks as part of their Consumer Price Index. You can look at the news releases by month, or look at Dec. to get the average for the year.

What is Academic Integrity?

Academic integrity is approaching your studies at Cleary University in a responsible and honest manner. Once lost or tainted, your record of academic integrity your academic reputation is difficult to rehabilitate. All academic work and the grades should be the result of your individual effort in mastering a specific content area. Your work should involve original thought and evidence of critical thinking: synthesizing and interpreting information, creative problem solving, distinguishing between fact and fiction. Additionally, any written submissions must include permissions (where appropriate) and proper citing.

What is Cheating?

Cheating is misconduct that involves the unauthorized use of resources, materials or other assistance in order to complete an assignment or test.

What is Plagiarism?

One form of cheating is plagiarism. Plagiarism is stating or implying that another person's work is yours. You commit plagiarism if you:

Submit a paper to be graded that you have not written.
Copy answers or text from another classmate and submit it as your own.
Quote or paraphrase from another paper without crediting the original author.
Cite data without crediting the original source.
Propose another author's idea as if it were your own.
Fabricate references or intentionally use incorrect references.
Submit someone else's presentation, program, spreadsheet, or other file with only minor alterations.

These are only a few examples. Any action that implies (intentionally or unintentionally) that the work of someone else is yours can constitute plagiarism. Read the OWL Avoiding Plagiarism Web site for an explanation on difference between using other people's research and plagiarism.

Specific Examples of Plagiarism

Wholesale copying ~ obtaining a complete paper from another source
Cutting and pasting ~ copying large chunks of text from one or more original sources and inserting it into the assignment
Inappropriate paraphrasing ~ quoted text is altered slightly from the original and no acknowledgment of the original author is given

Why Is Citing Important?

To strengthen your position. Otherwise, what you say is simply your opinion. Providing sources allows the reader to understand and evaluate your assertions. It's important to cite only sources that you have critically evaluated. Information on evaluation websites can be found on the Cleary University's Library website.
To give credit to others for their ideas. Taking credit for someone else's ideas is considered a violation of academic integrity, subject to severe penalties.
To provide evidence of research and critical thinking .
To direct the reader back to the source material. Researchers often use reference lists to gather additional information on a topic.

What Should Be Cited?

You should cite a source anytime you incorporate an idea, quote (written or spoken), data, image or other content that is not yours unless it is common knowledge.

Facts (specific bits of information, statistics) produced by a specific person or organization. You do not need to cite the date of an event or other facts that are considered common knowledge, but you should cite facts, data, statistics, and percentages.
Ideas and words of others. Using someone's ideas or words without acknowledgment is plagiarism.
Graphs or numbers taken from another source or if you CREATE a graph from numbers/data you found from another source. If someone, like a professor or business colleague, provides you with data or information in person or via email, you cite that as a "personal communication" in the body of your paper but you do not provide a corresponding entry in your reference list.

APA Citation Requirements

Only material cited in the body of your essay is included in your reference list.
Your parenthetical citation or signal phrase (Jones, 2006) must lead the reader to the corresponding reference in your list.
Personal correspondence or email is not verifiable and therefore does not appear in your reference list. You should mention the source in your essay.
The purpose of your reference list is to lead the reader back to the source material you are citing. Requirements differ for citing a proprietary (fee-based or subscription database like Proquest or CountryWatch) than for citing freely accessible web pages. Check with the Cleary librarian if you are in doubt.

ACADEMIC ACTIONS AS A CONSEQUENCE OF CHEATING OR PLAGIARISM

(This section primarily taken from Saupe, 1998)

Cases involving violations of this policy are confidential. No discussions will take place other than those needed to determine guilt or appropriate sanction, and all records under the University's control are destroyed if the student is exonerated. There is no statute of limitations that precludes faculty or staff from acting on the discovery of alleged violations either during the term or subsequently, including after the student has graduated.

An instructor who finds proof of plagiarism will first discuss with the student the nature of the case, including its moral implications and its academic ramifications, and seek input from the student as to the circumstances. Faculty is encouraged to consult their Department Chair (Academic Disciplinary Actions, 2000). Plagiarism normally results in a failing grade for the plagiarized work. The instructor also has the right to fail the student in the course. He or she may end the matter with his or her own action, if it is a non-flagrant or unintentional occurrence, or pass the case on to the Chair.
The Chair will report flagrant violations to the review committee (Academic Faculty Committee) with any recommendations for suspension or expulsion.
Students have the right to present their cases to the review committee before it deliberates. The decision of the review committee is final. If the faculty member involved is a member of the review committee, s/he does not participate while the appeal is being considered.

Conclusion

Cheating and plagiarism are not acceptable. Ignorance of what constitutes plagiarism does not excuse the act. Take the time to familiarize yourself with Cleary's plagiarism policy and when in doubt, cite. Plagiarism is a serious offense with serious consequences -- from failure in the course to expulsion. One case of plagiarism can jeopardize all of your coursework (past, present, future).

Obtain permission before you cite any information from proprietary materials (e.g., employee manuals, policy statements, organizational charts) at your workplace.. Failure to obtain permission could conceivably jeopardize your employment and/or undermine your integrity among supervisors and co-workers. If you draw material from sources, you must provide citations. This applies to material from articles, books, and the Internet. Your instructor will most likely recognize material that you did not write or come up with yourself. Don't take a chance, because the consequences will be quite severe when you are caught.

Remember that instructors have access to the same Internet you do. Understanding what constitutes plagiarism and the consequences of plagiarizing is your responsibility.

Your final grade is determined from the composite score of all of the assigned coursework (capstone milestone assignments, class participation, discussion forum activity, journal assignments.) Below is the standard grading scale used by Cleary University.

Cleary University Standard Grading Scale

All written work will be evaluated in terms of organization, content, depth, and clarity. Other requirements include proper use of APA formatting/documentation and adherence to standard rules of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure, and evidence of critical thinking.

A, A-	94-100% = A 90- 93% = A-	An earned grade assigned by the faculty indicating the student's work exceeded the minimum level of expectation in almost all areas.
B+, B, B-	87- 89% = B+ 84- 86% = B 80- 83% = B-	An earned grade assigned by the faculty indicating the student's work exceeded the minimum level of expectation in most areas
C+, C, C-	77- 79% = C+ 74- 76% = C 70- 73% = C-	An earned grade assigned by the faculty indicating the student's work met the minimum level of expectation in almost all areas.
D+, D, D-	67- 69% = D+ 64- 66% = D 60- 63% = D-	An earned grade assigned by the faculty indicating the student's work met the minimum level of expectation in most areas.
E (Fail)	59% & below = E	A grade assigned by the faculty indicating that, even though the student made an effort in the class, minimum expectations were not met. The student must retake the course to fulfill degree requirements.
NC		No Credit. A grade assigned by the faculty indicating that not enough work by the student took place to allow for an evaluation leading to an assigned grade. The student must retake the course to fulfill degree requirements
P		A pass grade either assigned by the faculty in a course indicating a pass grade, or by the Academic Program Committee as a result of a grade appeal. The student receives credit for the course.
I		Incomplete. A grade assigned by the faculty indicating that the student came just short of completing the course due to circumstances beyond his or her control and is given a grace period to finish the work without penalty.
R		Repeated Course. Grade assigned by the Records Office when the course has been repeated to replace a previously earned grade.
W		Withdrawal. The student elected to withdraw himself/herself from the course before the end of the seventh week.
IW		Institutional Withdrawal. The University withdrew the student from all classes because he/she did not attend any class and did not request a drop or withdrawal, or due to circumstances where the student was removed from class by the administration.
AU		Audit. Indicates a registration to audit a course: which is not for academic credit.

Books & Authors is a database to help you decide what to read next. Search by character, topic, setting, time period, genre, title, author, and series. Includes over 140,000 titles, 50,000 authors, and thousands of read-alike, award winner, and librarian's favorites lists. Titles include both fiction and non-fiction. Reader’s advisory.
Business and Company Resource Center is a fully integrated resource bringing together company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information. Mostly full text.
CAMIO® - Catalog of Art Museum Images Online—is a premiere resource of works of art from around the world contributed and described by leading museums.
ChiltonLibrary.com represents the most authoritative automotive repair information available to car owners.
CINAHL Basic provides indexing for 2,931 journals with 1,000,000 records dating back to 1981, covering nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers indexing to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,200 journals are also included. Full text material includes 70 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. Contains only limited full text (70 journals).
Computer Database has over 2,687,481 articles from journals, trade magazines and popular computing magazines. Michigan residents or Michigan library acces...
ECO Electronic Collections Online is a collection of scholarly journals in the sciences and social sciences. Includes agriculture, library science, anthropology, literature, business, medicine, economics, philosophy, education, political science, fine arts, psychology, geography, religion, history, science, language, social science, law, technology.
ERIC contains annotated references to non-journal material issued in the monthly Resources in Education (RIE) and to journal articles issued in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE).Recommended for: Educators and Parents. Mostly full text.
Expanded Academic ASAP contains magazine, newspaper and journal articles appropriate to college and university -level research. All topics. Mostly full-text.
Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research.
General BusinessFile ASAP provides information to analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Access to a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available.
General OneFile is a one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social sciences, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles.
General Reference Center Gold provides one-stop access to general interest magazines, business periodicals, reference books, maps, historical images, and newspaper articles. Records are available with a combination of indexing, abstracts, image, or full text formats.
Health and Wellness Resource Center provides access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Includes nearly 400 health/medical journals, hundreds of pamphlets, over 700 health-related videos from partner Healthology, Inc., articles from 2,200 general interest publications and links to reputable health Web sites in addition to a broad collection of Thomson Gale reference titles.
Health Reference Center Academic provides access to professional and personal health magazines, journals and reference sources.
History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM) integrates four premier tools to create an international bibliography for the history of science, technology and medicine. It reflects the influence of these fields on society and culture from prehistory to the present and offers outstanding value for interdisciplinary research. Database records describe journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews and dissertations in all scientific disciplines and related fields. Citations reflect the contents of nearly 9,500 journals.
InfoTrac Newsstand is a collection of more than 1,000 newspapers from around the country and the world. Includes the New York Times (1985-current). Mostly full text.
LegalTrac draws on a wide variety of the most highly regarded legal publications, LegalTrac® provides indexing for more than 1,400 titles including major law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals. Each title included in LegalTrac® is selected on the basis of criteria provided by a special advisory committee of the American Association of Law Libraries. LegalTrac® also contains law-related articles from over 1,000 additional business and general interest titles.
MEDLINE covers all areas of medicine, including dentistry and nursing. From the National Library of Medicine.
NewsBank Michigan Newspapers provides full text of the Detroit News (1/1/1999-Current and Grand Rapids Press (2002-Current) as well as almost 30 national news magazines.
OAIster is a catalog of digitized materials that includes books, articles and multimedia, representing multidisciplinary resources from more than 1,000 contributors worldwide.
World Almanacs contains full text of Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, The World Almanac and Book of Facts, The World Almanac for Kids, The World Almanac of the U. S. A., The World Almanac of U. S. Politics.

LexisNexis is an online database published by Reed Elsevier plc. LEXIS publishing is for the legal profession and the NEXIS unit serves the business, government and academic markets. The system is divided into Libraries, which contain related documents, and Files within the libraries. For the legal researcher, LexisNexis is heavily used for American case reports, legislation, International law, Canadian law, and Law Journals and newspapers (full-text).

Hoovers is an excellent resource for finding competitors, financial information, headquarters and subsidiaries, and personnel information. If you combine the information found here with what is available through Lexis/Nexis, you should be able to create an accurate financial picture of a publicly held company. There is some information on privately held companies, but there are no required reporting requirements for private companies.

NoodleTools helps you create APA formatted references. It also provides information on how to format in-text citations and includes a utility for gathering research notes. A NoodleTools account is automatically created for you when your enroll at Cleary University. Your User ID is the first initial of your first name, plus up to 10 letters of your last name, PLUS the last three digits of your student number: jdoe###. Your default password is: cleary PLUS your two digit birth month PLUS your two digit birth day. (If your birthday is January 1, then your password would be cleary0101.)

Each year, around the time your account as created, you will be asked to re-validate your folder. When prompted you'll need to add the School/Library Name and password (spaces and capitalization MATTER):
